Comparing ICC Cricket with T-20 Cricket

Article by Sophiehart

There has been a long debate on the controversies between the ICC Cricket world championship and T-20 cricket world championship for the past few years since the T-20 cricket was introduced into the world. Many cricket news critics were of the view that the twenty-twenty cricket will attract more audience than the normal 50-overs cricket, because of its time and cost-effectiveness with immediate results.

But unfortunately, we haven’t seen any such difference of inclining or declining audience-ship in both of the two games. We do admit that the newly introduced form of cricket is more interesting and takes not enough time for the outcome of potential results, but it doesn’t mean that 50-overs cricket has lost its charm among the cricket fans.

One of the most interesting examples of this form of cricket was noticed during ICC Cricket world cup 2011, where there was a big and even more than expected crowd during every world cup match. People have gone quite confused watching this situation, especially some of the sporting sports analysts, who have been claiming decline in the readership, audience-ship and viewership of cricket, were stunned watching this scenario.

Well, there are so many reasons for this. Few among them include the examples of football, as football lovers cannot leave playing and watching matches even if they take more than 3 hours to finish the game. Same is the case with cricket lovers too, as they cannot live without playing and watching cricket. When we talk of football, European and American nations are much into it, whereas, on the cricket side, there are Asian nations who have a craze of this game.

Coming to the comparison of ICC cricket and T-20 cricket, following are some of the major noticeable differences:

1. ICC cricket takes much time to finish as compared to T-202. T-20 costs less to organize the event as compared to ICC cricket.3. T-20 is quite fast and lets you know the talent of huge stroke players, whereas, the ICC cricket is quite slow, which gives you the opportunity to assess potential players.

Keeping these things in vision, different sporting sports experts and cricket news analysts suggest that the concerned authorities should take advantage of these two different events to choose players for two different types of cricket; that is for power play & normal play and for test cricket. It will really help them make teams stronger who will ultimately attract more audience.

Cricket in India on overdrive

It has almost been like carpet bombing – the media hype during the recent International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup of one-day internationals that was recently played out in the Indian sub-continent. The “bombing” was intensified just before the India-Pakistan semi-final played at Mohali, near Chandigarh.

The term “carpet bombing” has been described by Wikipedia, the online encyclopaedia, as large-scale bombing of targets covering wide areas usually by dropping many unguided bombs. The tactic aims for complete destruction of a target region, either to destroy personnel and material, or as a means of demoralizing the enemy. In somewhat similar fashion, the print and electronic media “bombed” the reader/viewer with everything they had to soften, if not demolish, his faculty of reason. The print media had sports and other pages dedicated to the World Cup; the TV news channels mounted programmes of discussions, talk-shows, teleconferences and what have you. With interesting names like “Power Play”, “Inside Story”, “Fourth Umpire”, “Kings of Cricket” etc. the programmes – much like unguided bombs – would obliterate regular news-and-views schedules and bombard viewers with opinions, anecdotes, cricketing trivia and suchlike. What’s more, there would be repeat telecasts in the mornings or late in the night for those who, by an odd chance, might have missed them. To add a touch of glamour, they had even inducted two very attractive ladies, one an actor and a cricket-lover and the other a former captain of the Indian women’s cricket team. The idea of the promoters of the channels seems to have been to force-feed the TV audiences, much like the famed Peking ducks or the Kobe cows, with the stuff that they had taken great pains to muster spending millions, maybe billions of rupees and dollars. While one could skip the sports pages of a daily, the visual media is another kettle of fish. It has that unmistakable tendency to arrest the viewers’ attention.

Not many years ago, only the channels that would telecast a match would assemble a few experts and put on the air the discussions in real time prompted by an anchor before the commencement of play, during the intervals or, as they say in cricket lingo, breaks and at the end of the game or, in case of a test match, at the end of the day’s play. It is no longer so. While the channels that buy out the rights to telecast the matches or the tournament continue with their rigmarole, others attracted by the target rating points (TRP), especially the English and vernacular languages news channels, too, have climbed on to the bandwagon. During the recent World Cup, therefore, at any hour of the day or night one or the other or several channels would be inflicting cricket on the unwary surfer.

While the vernacular language channels had to make do with former local heroes, a large number of retired national and international cricketers had been assembled along with numerous national and international commentators from practically every cricketing country. They would expatiate ad nauseam on the finer points of the games that had already been played or strengths or weaknesses of various players as also of the several teams in the fray with their prospects of advancing in the tournament. As hiring of these former foreign cricketing greats meant enormous outflow of cash they had to be kept busy and, hence, they would be put live on the air most of the time, sometimes even on prime time. News was pushed out into the background. During the World Cup the news channels all but forgot about Fukushima and the ongoing war in Libya. Nothing seemed to be news-worthy other than what transpired on the cricket ground. Fed up with this overdose, one felt like kicking the TV.

It’s not that I am not a cricket buff. In my younger days I was very much so. Not only would I play cricket in school and college, I would also, apart from reading books on cricket, avidly listen to the running commentary of matches over the radio. We would tune in to Radio Australia early in the morning to catch the Australia-England “Ashes” series or listen to the BBC till late into the night for the matches played in England with the edifying comments in ‘poetic’ prose by the legendary John Arlott. I still recall the embarrassing Test of 1952 at Headingley, Leeds where India were four wickets down for no-score. The Indian prestige was somewhat redeemed when Vinoo Mankad, later in the same series, scored 72 in the first innings, took 5 English wickets and the scored 184 in the second innings of the Test at the Lords Cricket Ground. The spectators gave him a standing ovation.

All India Radio would broadcast running commentaries when matches were played in India. I remember with nostalgia the delightful commentating of Dev Raj Puri who had mastered the art of giving ball-to-ball commentary, effectively conveying the atmosphere on the ground. Sometime later, Vijay Merchant, a retired cricketer, also started commentating with his thick Gujarati accent. Even “Vizzy”, the Maharaj Kumar of Vizianagaram, a cricket busybody, had insinuated himself into the commentary box. For him what was happening on the ground was of little importance. He would expound more on the exploits of Polly Umrigar in the Queens’ Park Oval, Trinidad or Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.  Most interesting, however, used to be the chats of AFS Talyarkhan with commentators during the tea-break around the early 1950s. He was reputed to be a marathon commentator earlier and used to cover entire five-day Test matches by himself. Later, he used to write a witty column on cricket with the title “Do you get me Steve?” I still remember a devastating one of his directed at Vijay Merchant on the much-publicised incident of a girl kissing Abbas Ali Baig after he scored a hundred at Bombay in a Test. “Vijay Merchant was wondering on the air”, he wrote, “where all the girls were when he was scoring his hundreds. Fast asleep Vijay, they were too tired of waiting”, followed by the inevitable “Do you get me Steve?”  An opening batsman, old-timers would remember, Merchant, though technically perfect, was undoubtedly a plodder.

Cricket was earlier quintessentially a sport indulged in by the upper and middle classes. Patronised by the maharajas and nawabs, it used to be played mostly by the feudals and their progeny. Even the commentaries over the radio were listened to by them and the middle classes who possessed the radio-receivers – a rarity in those days. The common man as also the deprived masses could never afford it and, hence, never showed any interest in the game. A change came over after transistorisation of the radio. It became cheap, affordable and portable. Running commentaries in Hindi extended the reach of cricket making it more fathomable to the non-English knowing crowd. The game received a big boost in popularity when India won the third edition of the Cricket World Cup in 1983. Advancement in technology gave it a further boost with proliferation of TV sets and cable and satellite channels carrying live images of matches into the living rooms. Today, cricket is watched on TV by millions of Indians in high-end houses as also in rural and urban shanties, even if the power in the latter happens to be purloined. A once-aristocratic game has been taken by TV to the plebeians and they have taken to it, virtually, like the duck takes to water.

The viewership in multi-millions generates billions of dollars in advertisement revenues. It has made the country’s apex cricketing body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, cash-rich, giving it an enormous clout in international cricket. India may not be a world economic power yet, but it surely is a world cricketing power. And, before anybody could get wise about it, cricket’s centre of gravity shifted from England to India. No wonder, the ICC World Cup was played out recently in the sub-continent for the second time and two sub-continental teams fought out for the honours with India winning the Cup. The Central and some state governments gave a holiday to the cricket-crazy staff to cheer the home team even if they did so from the comfort of their homes. No work would have been done in offices even otherwise. Strangely, streets wore a deserted look as if the towns and cities were under curfew.

With the kind of money cricket now generates things certainly had to change. It has become a year-round circus and is no longer a sport for the three or four winter months as of yore. With everyone raking in the moolah none seems to resent it. There is, therefore, going to be no respite from cricket. Even as dust is yet to settle down after the World Cup, the Indian Premier League’s Twenty-Twenty (T-20) tournament has commenced and cricket will again monopolise the TV channels for the next fifty days.

Cricket Chaos

Article by Bertha

The whole chaos started the 14th of January 2011. I went online to pay my bill on Jan 13 of about .00. I click “pay bill” and a message in red little letters stated something along the lines of “You have exceeded the amount of transactions permitted to be paid and for your security payment will not be accepted”. Like everyone else, I figured there has got to be a glitch. I have never heard of this. I then did the whole payment process again. Clicked “pay bill” again and the same message about not accepting my payment for security purposes came up again.I became annoyed and wrote two emails, since one is extremely limited in expressing ones annoyance in just “200 words or less” that is permitted in the comment box. I was additionally annoyed since payment is due the 16th and I have to drive to the “official dealer” which is a 30 minute drive. So, I get to the dealer. I explain the message. The guy “T” stares at screen thinking that I am convinced that he knows what he is doing. I give him my card and, of course, even though it’s not my fault, I am required to pay an additional .00 for physically coming into the store pay my bill. I did point out that it was their system and not my doing and they spoke of a possible “glitch” but I still had to pay an additional .00 for their computer systems error.I get home a bit relieved since my bill is paid. I wanted to see what the status of my checking account since my Resolution was to keep my checkbook balanced. I sign on and in shock that I had only .00 in my account! I call my credit union, Valley First Credit Union in Modesto, and ask what transactions are in the process of going through. My worst fear was met. CRICKET HAS ONCE AGAIN DOUBLE CHARGED ME!!It turns out that my original payment of .00 did go through even though their system said it didn’t and the 59.00 has also gone through. I ask the credit union what I can do to fix this. They said all the Cricket has to do is fax over on letterhead stating “Please release the transaction hold on the amount of .00″. I was excited since it sounds easy enough, right? I call “Cricket Corporate”. No need to get excited, it’s an illegitimate “corporate” number. Its just a call center. I tell them the whole thing. The CSA tells me that he can credit my account or send me a refund in 7-10 days. I ask him “and what do I do with only .00 for the next 7-10 days?” Of course, the typical scripted “Im sorry ma’am………” I then explained what my credit union said and he said that will be fine. He also said the Cricket store can give back my money. I repeated this 5 times, to confirm that the Cricket store can give my money back. I got it confirmed 5 times. So I drive back to the store and see T (not by choice). T admitted to not reviewing my account and just taking the payment because somehow T “heard” me say that my phone is going to be shut off and he just took the payment. I explained what the CSA said. He said they lie and the store cannot give back .00. T never apologized. According to his behavior he had no responsibility in this whole fiasco at all. Nope. Because he, the one who stared at the computer screen for 8 mins faking to have the intelligence to understand what I just explained has no accountability at all for the .00 mistake he made due to his lack of initiative. I mean, one must get mentally exhausted breathing through ones mouth for 8 hours a day and keeping a chair warm, right?I then asked to talk to his supervisor. He went to the back room. Anyone with a brain cell knows what happens when an associate screws up and is trying to cover their behind. He went back there and filled her in with the one sided information so that he appears to have tried to be the “hero” for the customer only to have overlooked a minor detail. The supervisor, S, comes out and has been “informed” of what happened. She tells me that she put in a request for a refund and it will take 7-10 days. I tell her, that this is the third time Cricket has screwed me out of money do to their error. She said she didn’t know this was an ongoing problem. I told her what the CSA said and she said she will call the “Operations Manager” at “Corporate” and see if I can get my money back like the CSA said. I told her what my credit union said about the faxing over something with a title of something and that I will contact them and get the actual name of it. She said she will call operations. I then get clarification on what my credit union said. I go back into the store and see S. I tell S what my credit union says. She starts shaking her head and says “I don’t have any letterhead only corporate does”. Really? An official dealer of Cricket does not have any letterhead to fax over a request to release a .00 transaction hold, on a Friday over a 3 day weekend? I don’t buy it. She once again offered to do the 7-10 days refund. I requested her phone number so that I can contact her instead of the 1800 number. She gave it to me.I then got it my car and cried on my way home. Frustrated because I am being held accountable for a charge that I am not at fault for. Frustrated the lack of empathy, sympathy and an apology from the seat warmer named T. Frustrated because the CSA was just as intelligent as T.So, now, thanks to the super secret location and phone number to actual Cricket which prevents any direct contact with those in power, I have to figure out what to do financially with the .00 Cricket left me with.

On January 17, 2011 I recieved the following email:Now, i did copy, paste and delete some inform to protect me

(J)1/28/11 14:49Hi S. Why do I have a bill for 4 cents? I want a refund and not credit I explained that. And it is now the 9th day.(M)1/28/11 15:16 I am not at work, you can go visit the store for explanation on your bill(Nice right? Here is she is telling me one thing and whole other thing is actually going on behind closed doors. It was a great stalling tactic. Sadly, I was fooled into thinking she was actually advocating on my behalf but instead was stalling so Cricket can steal my money while keeping me tied to their business since, according to my new bill statement I have just now paid for February. And owe $ .04. The geniuses wasted postage on $ .04!)

I have had issues with Cricket before not this extreme. This situation resulted in me doing additional research. It turns out that Cricket has a list of complaints varying from lies to theft. Type in “Cricket Complaints” and there is your list. One complaint that I encountered repeatedly and an issue that I had to deal with was that I did not have the actual corporate number to contact. I only had access to the call centers, which claim to be in Colorado and Texas, but if you call you can tell they are in India. So, I did my research and typed in “CEO of Cricket” and came up with information I have been seeking. . I looked up CEO of Cricket, which is part of the LEAP company, and found out that they are located in San Diego California. There is a fax number and phone number, which i don’t believe is a call center because they asked me to enter extension or listen to the list of names. According to Bloomberg businessweek.com the follow individuals are involved with Cricket. (Take into account that these individuals might have not been kept up to date on what is going on in the “real world” of Cricket. Also, more then likely they use another cell service instead. (hehe, my little guess).Stewart Douglas Hutcheson Chief Executive Officer, President, Interim Chief Financial Officer and DirectorGlenn Umestu Chief Operating Officer, Chief Technology Officer and Executive ViceDavid B. Davis Senior Vice President of OperationsRobert J. Irving Jr. Senior Vice President and General CounselLinda K. Wokoum Senior Vice President of Marketing and Senior Vice President of Customer Care

The customer abuse and neglect should not be allowed to go on. A majority of us like Cricket. It is the theft, the lies and the denial which results in pure hatred of Cricket. These individuals have some type of accountability for the lack of care and concern that Cricket continues to demonstrate. If you contact them, be pleasant. They are likely “number people” and are looking at the financial gains and have no clue what type of service their customers are getting. If enough of us contact them and inform them directly of what type of service is affiliated with their own individual name, we just might be able to turn their corrupt behavior around. However, if you, as a consumer still get no action in fixing the problem, then complain. Ruffle feathers like you never ruffled feathers before. Contact the BBB, CPUC, Attorney General and your local Representative (Yea, I know, an oxymoron with the current political enviroment)I am in the process of ruffling feathers. I had been in touch with the retail. I did contact Customer Service. Today I faxed my situation to the BBB of San Diego (since that is where headquarters is located, that is the BBB to contact)and I have faxed to the “Headquarters”.How this will end I do not know but overall, my experience with Cricket has been great, until I have had a problem then all H*** breaks loose. Apparently I am not alone.

Universal Soldier ? the GenNext Cricketer

In these days of racy changes in cricket, opinions are myriad. One is that Twenty20 cricket will change the way we view our Test cricketers. So, what will cricket’s future star be like? What kind of player will play across all styles of cricket?

The IPL Their Oyster

The Indian Premier League has provided a glitzy stage for international aspirants to perform and be noticed by the selectors. Now, some onlookers are even questioning how important the Ranji and Deodhar Trophies and other traditional domestic tournaments will be to spot new Indian talent for 50-over matches and Tests.

No doubt, Twenty20 cricket is completely different from the five-day variety and arguably, from 50-overs. Still, considering at least 60 per cent of India’s Twenty20 players are able to gravitate to the other two formats, a whole new jack-of-all-cricket generation may be about to mutate, importantly, from Twenty20.

More Twenty-20 tournaments

An immediate spin-off from the first IPL in 2008 was the Champions League and here, a youngster proving his talent would merit at least the same consideration if not more. Therefore, the opportunities just seem to be multiplying through Twenty20.

Critics may say that the Champions League shouldn’t be a selection ground for India prospects because it won’t necessarily showcase the best local talent (Only the top three IPL teams qualify). There is some logic there, however, the question can be turned around to “Can the selectors ignore a performance at least as good?” Theoretically, the league represents a ‘higher class’ of cricket.

Foreign Leagues

There is yet another T20 window of opportunity for today’s starry-eyed youngster – the premier leagues of other countries; Piyush Chawla who plays for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL represented the English domestic side Sussex in their T20 league. Who’s to say that a sterling performance in a foreign league like this wouldn’t hand a player a spot in the Indian team, particularly if the climatic or pitch conditions are similar to the tour destination; selectors are only too conscious of the conditions when picking sides to tour.

Ideal Players

Ian Chappell had early on identified JP Duminy as the ‘blueprint’ of a player suited for 20-20 cricket, a label the diminutive South African has lived up to. Now, talent scouts of all the cricket boards may be out to find ‘blueprint’ players suited to all three versions of the game — Agreed, the term doesn’t fit to the ‘T’ in this respect, however, we’re talking about players who may be predominantly T20 but comfortably hold their place in the other two versions.

Yes, there is the wisdom of not burning out a player by playing him in all three formats but lately, we have a new trend– to rest players from specific tourneys or series. If these are consistently made the recovery windows for today’s highly skilled and athletically grilled cricketer, then he can be match-ready for important fixtures across all three types of cricket.

Fast-paced Tests

There are advantages of grooming a multiple-game cricketer; particularly the batsman–Test cricket is played amidst fast run-scoring previously unseen, therefore needing attacking batsmen from the T20s and 50-overs. Similarly, bowlers in Tests are expected to prise out batsmen faster and not merely wear them down — no wonder there have been inventions like the doosra, the back-of-the-hand-flipper, the knuckle ball and the slow bouncer in the last decade and a half compared to only the googly in the hundred years before that.

Further, the international media which tended to approve our play leading to respectable draws is these days showering praises on ‘positive play’ and ‘true winners.’ Therefore, captains are willing to make challenging declarations or chase stiff targets at the equal risk of defeat. High-voltage, bold and exciting Test cricket is here to stay.

Correct Combinations

Next, with the current success mantra of finding the right team combination instead of combining the best individual players, the selectors may be happy to play ‘the lads familiar with each other’ in more than one type of cricket. Recently, Twenty20 specialist Shahid Afridi of Pakistan was offered the post of captain for all three versions, an experiment which didn’t succeed for Tests, but the appointment could still cause a global shift in thinking. After all, India’s MS Dhoni is the captain in all formats, although he made the transition gradually, starting with T20.

The ‘Athletes’

At the inauguration of the National Cricket Academy in India a decade ago, Rod Marsh referred to the cricketers as ‘athletes,’ a tag that stuck. A new cricket culture based on supreme fitness was going to be the formula for the twenty-first century — a cricketer would put in disproportionately longer hours of training in endurance, strength and allied skills, compared to cricket. As expected, the hard work started paying off.

Premier Fitness

The IPL franchises too have focussed on the fitness and cross training needs of their players. Kings XI Punjab on its part has a qualified Strength and Conditioning coach to drive the boot camp and the season’s exertions. Training programmes are tailored to individual needs and an eagle eye kept on fitness levels during the off-season period also.

The dynamic thinking from the fledgling franchise has even influenced the parent body, the Punjab Cricket Association to partner with it in fitness camps, another example of institutional cricket learning from the ‘new arrival.’

Injuries and Player Resting

The start of the millennium therefore saw fitter and stronger players but more prone to injuries, because of which many started missing matches. It led to the tactic of resting players, although conventional thinking made team managements initially very hesitant not to play their best ones. Simultaneously, there has been a crusade towards lightening the cricket calendar and spacing the matches well.

Change Management

Coming back to the present day, our evolved T20, ODI and Test player would have to deal with an additional aspect —the changeover across three formats in short time spans. Don’t forget that physical apart, a player’s mental strain will increase, what with having to bat or bowl to individual targets given by coaches and captains. If the future is likely to see the rise of this new ‘all-rounder,’ one thing is certain – rest and recovery will become an even more important part of managing players’ careers.

Unforgiving Itineraries

With the spurt in cricket commercialism since 2000 it is going to be very difficult to reduce the number of matches or tournaments, as the modern game itself depends upon the revenues to run successfully. Therefore, again, the only solution is to rest players from entire tournaments.

Tests’ Avatars

Test cricket in the meantime is mulling changes to bring back the viewer, one being day-night Tests. Another suggestion is to make teams play a Test until it ends in a result, regardless of the number of days taken. However, this is unlikely to receive much support although it was the norm less than a hundred years ago; one Test had to be abandoned because the steamer was leaving the country on the tenth day and the visiting team could not afford to miss it!

Split Innings

Sachin Tendulkar suggested a hybrid between a Test and a 50-over match — teams would play each other over two innings of 50 overs each, which would retain the feel of a Test but with the pulse of a limited-overs match. Already CA (Cricket Australia) has adapted this theme on a trial basis to a domestic tournament.

Whether Test cricket changes its form or not, it is certain that its players will be styled like Ninjas, of various batting, bowling or fielding forms. They’re most likely to be borrowed from T20. The future remains exciting!
